Kozler research, prototype, verify process

Step 1: Find the leaks

We ran workshops to understand who was really buying from Restore, and why. Then we went through the store looking for every place it failed those customers. What came out was a ranked list of what was costing them money.

Step 2: Build better experiences

We rebuilt the pages costing them the most. A homepage that speaks to the customers actually buying. A buying experience built for filling a basket. A subscription that works the way their business does.

Step 3: Roll out and track the results

We took the new store live, then watched how customers actually used it. Heat maps, session data and customer feedback showed us what to adjust. We kept refining from there.

Finding the Real Reason People Buy

Problem

Restore was built on a plastic-free promise, and that was the first thing every visitor saw. It's a genuine part of the business and worth being proud of. But nobody had checked whether it was the reason people were actually buying.


What we found

  • Their buyers turned out to be busy Sydney professionals, people with money, but not time.
  • What those customers wanted was produce of a higher quality than a the supermarket held.
  • Plastic-free mattered to them. But it was a reason to feel good about the purchase, not the reason to make it.


What we changed

  • Repositioned the site around convenience and quality, which is what customers were buying.
  • Kept the plastic-free mission on the page as a supporting reason to buy rather than the headline. The mission stayed exactly as it was,only its place in the argument changed.

Homepage Rebuild

Problem

The homepage led with plastic-free packaging and the health benefits behind it. For a first-time visitor deciding whether to spend $80 on groceries from a company they've never heard of, none of that answered the question they were asking.

The design worked against it too. Restore was running an off-the-shelf template that could have belonged to any business. Nothing on the page felt like a premium produce brand.

What we changed

  • Rewrote the homepage to lead with the two things customers were buying: produce they can't get at a supermarket, delivered to their door.
  • Made Sydney delivery clear up front, so local customers know immediately that Restore serves them.
  • Moved the plastic-free story further down the page, where it strengthens the decision rather than replacing it.
  • Replaced the templated design with a bespoke build in Restore's own brand, so the site looks like the quality it's selling.

Buying Experience

Problem

People shopping for produce want to fill a basket. Most Restore customers were after three or four items, but the site was built to sell one at a time.

Each purchase meant opening a product page, adding to cart, then navigating back to the shop to start again. After one or two items, most customers gave up and checked out. The site was pushing people to buy less than they wanted to.

There was a second problem underneath it. Restore only delivers in Sydney, and nothing on the site said so until checkout. Customers outside the delivery area could spend ten minutes building a full order before finding out it couldn't be fulfilled.

What we changed

  • Replaced product-by-product buying with a bundle builder, so customers build a complete basket in one place without leaving the page.
  • Added an address checker early in the buying experience, so customers know Restore delivers to them before they invest time in an order.
  • Restructured the path from browsing to checkout so adding a fourth item is easier than abandoning the basket.

Subscriptions & Customer Portal

Problem

Restore's subscription setup was generic, and their business model isn't. Customers found it confusing to manage what they'd signed up for. And when a subscription is confusing, people don't ring up for help. They cancel.

What we changed

  • Rebuilt the subscription experience around how Restore's business actually works, so what customers see matches what they've bought.
  • Built a customer portal where subscribers can manage their orders without needing to contact anyone.
  • Removed the friction points that were turning ordinary questions into cancellations.
