Here's the process we ran on Boating Central's store.

Kozler research, prototype, verify process

Step 1: Find the leaks

We ran workshops to understand who buys from Boating Central, and why. Then we went through the store looking for every place it failed those customers. What came out was a ranked list of what was costing them money.

Step 2: Build better experiences

We rebuilt the pages costing them the most. A homepage that sells the business, not just the discount. Product recommendations that fit the individual customer. A cart that lets people keep shopping.

Step 3: Roll out and track the results

We took the changes live, then watched how customers actually used them. Heat maps, session data and customer feedback showed us what to adjust. We kept refining from there.

Homepage Rebuild

Problem

The homepage was rows of discounted products, one after another. Nothing above or around them explained who Boating Central are, or why anyone should buy from them rather than the cheaper listing three tabs over.

That's a costly way to sell when you've been trading for decades and run physical stores customers can walk into. Boating Central had more trust built up than almost anyone in the category, and none of it was on the page.

What we changed

  • Built a new hero section that tells a first-time visitor what Boating Central is and why it's worth buying from them.
  • Added trust signals near the top of the page, including the physical stores — proof most online competitors can't match.
  • Brought the main categories up the page, so sailing, fishing and yachting customers can go straight to what they came for.
  • Created new sections to showcase products properly rather than presenting everything as a discount.
  • Added clear steps guiding customers through how to buy, rather than leaving them to work it out.
  • Rewrote the copy across the page to speak to customers who've never heard of Boating Central, not just the ones who already shop there.

Personalised Cross-Selling

Problem

The Boating Central site recommended products more or less at random. A customer buying a fishing reel would be shown whatever the system happened to surface, which usually had nothing to do with what they were doing. Recommendations that obviously don't fit train customers to stop looking at them.

What we changed

  • Built a personalised recommendation engine that looks at what each customer has bought before, what they're viewing, and what's already in their cart.
  • Factored in the ad the customer arrived from, so someone who clicked a sailing ad sees sailing gear rather than generic bestsellers.
  • Added frequently-bought-together recommendations at the points where a customer is deciding, not after they've committed.
  • Every customer now sees a different set of products, matched to what they're actually shopping for.
  • This lifted both the number of cross-sold products and average order value.

Cart Page

Cart Drawer Upgrade

Problem

Adding an item to the cart ended the shopping session. The old setup sent customers straight to a separate cart page, so the next step in front of them was checkout or leave. For a store where most customers need three or four things for the same job, that's an expensive place to interrupt them.

What we changed

  • Replaced the cart page redirect with a slide-out drawer, so customers stay on the page they were browsing.
  • Added the personalised recommendations into the drawer, at the moment customers are most open to adding one more item.
  • Added a free shipping progress bar showing customers how close they are to the threshold.
  • Added gift incentives at higher order values to give customers a reason to build a larger basket.

Checkout Page

About Page

Problem

For a business trading on decades of history, the About page said almost nothing. It didn't explain who Boating Central are, how long they've been doing it, or why a new customer should trust them with a $400 order.

New customers are exactly the people who read an About page. They arrive unsure, go looking for a reason to believe, and find nothing.

What we changed

  • Expanded the About page to tell customers who Boating Central are and how long they've been serving boaters.
  • Brought the physical stores into the story, since a business customers can visit in person answers a question no online-only retailer can.
  • Wrote the page for the customer deciding whether to trust them, rather than as a corporate formality.
